Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kiochoge and world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei broke the Tokyo marathon track record early Sunday in Japan.
Wilson Kipsang, who was competing in the Tokyo marathon for the first time, emerged victorious by recording a time of 2 hours and 40 seconds, breaking Wilson Kipsang's 2017 record of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 58 seconds.
The world record holder demonstrated his prowess by leaving his opponents at a distance of 35 kilometers shortly after the runners withdrew.
Amos Kipruto finished in second place with 2 hours, 3 minutes and 13 seconds, with Tamirat Tola taking third place with 2 hours, 4 minutes and 14 seconds.
Brigid Kosgei won the women's race, setting a new Tokyo marathon record of 2 hours 16 minutes and 2 seconds, breaking Israel's Lornah Chemtai record of 2 hours 17 minutes and 45 seconds.
Ashete Bekere and Gotytom Gebreslase took second and third place, respectively, with a time of 2 hours 17 minutes and 58 seconds and 2 hours 18 minutes and 18 seconds, respectively.
Kipchoge and Kosgei lead the world standings of six major races with 25 points each.
