The 16 Teams That Will Participate In The Group Stage Of The African Champions League Have Been Identified

A list of 16 teams that competed in the group stages of the African Champions League has been revealed, following the conclusion of the return leg matches on Sunday night.

Aside from the 14 rocks that qualified for the group stage, two teams from Botswana's Juaneng Galaxy and Amazulu Fc from South Africa made history by qualifying for the first time.

Juaneng, despite losing 2-0 at home to Tanzanian champions Simba SC, rallied and reversed the result on Sunday evening when they beat Simba 3-1 in the return leg at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and Limbukeni Juaneng qualified for the away goal after the match ended in a draw. 3-3.

Amazulu favored Royal Zulu despite participating in the Champions League for the first time stunned five-time champions Toupiza Mazembe of Drc by an away goal rule when they forced a 1-1 draw in Kinsasha following a barren draw in the first round.

The teams that qualified for the group round are 10 times champions and defending champions Al Ahly and 5 times champions Zamalek all from Egypt, four-time champions Esperance and 1-time champions Etoile Du Sahel all of Tunisia.

Algeria will be represented by two teams, two-time winners Entete De Setif and CR Belouizdad, while South Africa will be represented by 2016 champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Amazulu.

Other teams in the round of 16 are AC Horoya who are Guinea champions, Angolan champions Sagrada Esperanca Dundo participating for the third time along with their teammates Petro Atletico.

Morocco has drawn two teams that have won the trophy five times together, with Raja Casablanca winning three times and Wydad Casablanca who have won the trophy twice while Sudan has two representatives Al Hilal Omdurman and Al Merreikh.

The 16 teams that dropped out of the Champions League will be drawn with the other 16 of the Confederations Cup to compete for a qualifying ticket for the Confederations Cup group stage.

The draw for the Champions League groups is expected to be announced later this week..
