Despite pressure from the Ethiopian government to end hostilities with the Tigray rebels in order to reach an agreement through negotiations, the Ethiopian government has refused to end the fighting against the rebels.

In a statement via social media, Ethiopia has stated that it is fighting a war that will not be disrupted by foreign propaganda.

Several African nations, the European Union and the United States, have called for a ceasefire and for peace talks.

U.S. Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman is visiting Ethiopia to promote a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Although the Ethiopian government has claimed victory, Tigray militants continue to advance and have already captured several cities.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently called on the country's citizens to take up arms and defend the nation against Tigray rebels who appeared to be gaining power after capturing several cities in the country.

Abiy made the remarks on his Facebook page after the rebels seized parts of the Amhara area and approached the capital, Addis Ababa.

A spokesman for the group, Getachew Reda, said they had seized the town of Kombolcha, a claim denied by the Ethiopian government.

The prime minister has also accused foreign forces of collaborating with Tigray rebels in recent fighting in key areas of the Amhara region.

US President Joe Biden has announced plans to scrap Ethiopia's agreement to sell its products in the United States tax-free.

However, the Ethiopian government said it was "deeply saddened" by the US move, saying the United States should rescind the move by January 7.
