Seven prison officials in Kamiti prison have been arrested following the escape of three terrorist inmates who were serving their sentences.
Minister of National Security Dr. Fred Matiangi, said the Kamiti prison is the most secure prison in the country and that the move to escape the prisoners was due to incompetence and irresponsibility.
According to the Minister, more people are likely to be arrested and prosecuted after a thorough investigation into the incident is being carried out by DCI's intelligence department.
MatiangÃ, who led security officials to visit Kamiti prison on Monday evening, said a search operation had been launched across the country.
The escaped terrorists include Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga aka Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo aka Yusuf, with the DCI department announcing a $ 60 million reward for information leading to their arrest.
Accompanied by Secretary-General Karaja Kibicho, Correctional Services Secretary Zeynab Mohammed, Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, DCI director George Kinoti and prison commissioner Wycliffe Ogallo, he said that after visiting the prison A6 building where the detainees were detained, was not satisfied with the information of the prison authorities about the incident.
In 2019, Abikar was indicted and found guilty of having links with the Alshabab group and participating in an attack on Garissa University in 2015, in which 148 people were killed.
For his part, Odhiambo was arrested in 2019 for trying to join the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
Akhulunga was arrested in 2012 on suspicion of plotting to assassinate the national assembly and was charged with possession of explosives, ammunition and firearms.
