A Homemade Explosive Device Has Killed Two People in Kisumu County

An improvised explosive device exploded, killing two people in one house in Kamloma village, Awach township, Kisumu county.

Among the dead are a man believed to be a supporter of the illegal Alshabaab group John Odhiambo Ondiek jokingly Pope, as well as a woman believed to be the owner of the house when the explosion occurred.

Confirming the case, Awach deputy chief James Okoth said Ondieki arrived at Petro Onyango's home at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday night, and began questioning him and his wife Mary Atieno, and their daughter Nancy Aoko about things they did not understand.

Shortly afterwards, the homemade explosive device exploded, killing both the suspect and his wife, Onyango. Onyango and his daughter were seriously injured.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where Onyango was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old girl is receiving treatment at Katito Hospital.

Residents of Kamloma village identified the body of a suspect who they said disappeared after an attempt to kill his girlfriend on December 17, 2020 by detonating a homemade explosive device at Katito market.

The national police service has described the incident as a terrorist attack.
