Achebi Retains WBC Welterweight Title in Muay Thai Sport

At welterweight, Kenya's Martin Achebi retained the WBC Muay Thai Africa belt after defeating Cape Verde's Matias Brayan 2-1 by a judges' decision at the Ultra fight, held on Saturday night at Bomas of Kenya.

Achebi, boasting support from home fans who flooded the Bomas hall, got off to a good start in the five-round bout, dominating the first round, but was overwhelmed by his opponent in the second and third rounds, respectively.

The Kenyan returned to the ring in the fourth round with great enthusiasm and made sure he won the round and the final and made history by becoming the first boxer in the country to retain

The WBC crown weighs 67 kg.

However, things got tough for another Kenyan, Javan Buyu, who lost 1-2 points in the WBC 57 kg featherweight bout with Salim Mbaye of Senegal.

Buyu won four and five rounds in his bout, but was overwhelmed in the first three rounds by his Senegalese rival.

In another six non-title fights, Kenya's Ben Bottleberg defeated his teammate Brian Kimani in the first round by knocking him out at 105 kg.

Kenya's Jared Oscar beat Uganda's Bruce Mugerwa in the third round by knocking out a 52kg, while Brian Nyambare of the country also beat Mohammed Al Munir of Sudan in the fourth round by knocking out, and Mohammed Ali of Sudan won by the bulk of the score against Faruk Ogwak of Uganda.

Uganda's Josiah Lumunya defeated Hamza Bounabri of Morocco in the second round via knockout.

Boxers from France, Uganda, Cape Verde, Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan and locals in Kenya participated in the tournament organized by Muay Thau Africa.
