Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said he has ordered the military to fulfill its duty to save the nation and the people in the northern province of Tigray after accusing the TPLF party, which has been leading the province since the early 90's, of "starting a war."
The Prime Minister has accused the TPLF party of attacking a military base in the province. That comes after months of tensions between the central government in Addis Ababa and the Tigray state authorities.
The TPLF previously accused Abiy's administration of using the corona virus as a reason to stay in power after his legal term expired in early October.
The country's government has repeatedly accused the TPLF of causing violence across the country.
According to the institute that monitors internet freedom, Netblocks has been shutting down Internet and telephone data early Wednesday morning in Tigray state.
A statement from the Prime Minister stated that "the border has been crossed" and that to save the country and the general public, the use of force has become a last resort, "against the TPLF.
