A 52-year-old wanted bandit was arrested in the United States

A rampant bank robber in the United States has been identified after a 52-year search, law enforcement officials have announced.

Ted Conrad grew up serving as a cashier at Society National Bank in Clevland, Ohio when he robbed his employer in 1969.

He disappeared with a total of $ 215,000, currently worth $ 1.7 million.

Investigators from the US Army said he later lived a quiet and self-respecting life.

Conrad, who died in May from cancer, was only 20 years old when he committed the robbery. He was reported to have misused the bank's security guards, from the money hidden in a plastic bag when they closed on Friday evening.

Some bank employees discovered the money had disappeared two days later, Conrad had disappeared.

He created a search that would last for more than half a century and the case continued to be shown on television programs such as America's Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries.

According to the Military Service, Conrad allegedly told his friends about his plans to rob the bank and boasted how easy it would have been to do so.

He is said to have been fascinated by Steve McQueen's 1968 film, The Thomas Crown Affair, and to watch it more than twelve times during his preparation for the robbery.

Soldiers say after his disappearance Conrad changed his name to escape to Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, before settling in Boston about 1,000 kilometers from the crime scene.

Investigators say he later lived a quiet and self-respecting life and the New York Times reported that he had spent 40 years working as a golfer and selling used cars.
