Authorities in Ecuador have reported that at least 68 prisoners have been killed and 25 wounded in clashes between criminal gangs at Guayas N1 Prison in the port city of Guayaquil on the Pacific Coast.
The prosecutor's office said the death toll was based on preliminary reports, adding that it had launched an investigation into the violence, which began on Friday night and continued until yesterday morning.
Yesterday, the national police department said an operation was underway at the Guayas N1 prison to maintain order and stability.
Local media reported that police, two pistols and 10 pistols were seized during the operation. Last night, the Guayas provincial government in Guayaquil said it had recorded new fighting in the prison.
