The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a truck belonging to al-Shabaab militants.

The truck was in a convoy that had just returned to fetch water from one part of Kenya and was crossing over to Somalia.

Details of the incident were few and the soldiers at the Defense Department headquarters did not immediately comment.

Pictures of the truck involved in the incident showed that it was badly damaged.
